November Pictures: 12/30 Tonight was the opening night of the local high school's play, "Piece of my Heart". It was a rather chewy piece about women serving in Vietnam. My son Kevin ran the lights for it, while his girlfriend was one of the main actors. Aren't they cute? This was snapped just after the show, when all the cast and crew were out in the lobby waiting for their parents. I can't believe how quickly (and how well) he's growing up. |

November Pictures: 11/30 I was playing with the sock knitting machine again today, and this time remembered to take a picture of it. Normally, there are lots of little latch-hook looking needles sticking up out of it. When I crank the handle there on the right, the blue yarn carrier goes round and round, and the needles raise up and grab the yarn to make their individual stitch. Right now though, I only have four needles in place, because I'm making knitted cording. The finished cording is hanging down below the machine there. The weights keep the yarn from riding up and off of the needles as I am working. I cranked out two yards tonight, in next to no time at all. I'm thinking it might be useful for making cording to couch down onto garb, in all sorts of big bold heraldic patterns. Hmmm...I wonder how it would full down, if you used non superwash wool? Piping? Belts? All sorts of possibilities to play with! |

November Pictures: 10/30 Ok, I am very very proud of this one! Awhile ago, I purchased an antique (about 100 years old) circular sock knitting machine off of Ebay. I've been busily restoring it since then, and teaching myself how to use it. This evening, I completed my first pair of socks. They are made of Lion Brand Sock-Ease yarn, which is 75% wool/25% nylon. They are machine washable. Start to finish, it took about 4 hours to make them, which included time to teach myself how to deal with dropped stitches, and how to do the kitchener stitch to graft the toes closed. I expect that time will drop significantly as I get more practice. I foresee lots and lots of custom socks in my future!! Current Mood: accomplished |

Here's a bonus picture of the kittens who were found under Shane's truck, because the more representative picture for today is possibly not safe for work and is below the cut. ( Read more... ) |

50 Challenge: Narrow Wares: 39/50: Card woven band This is one of two matching card woven bands I did. This is a neat technique--the yellow cards were only threaded in two of the four holes. That means the weft thread can peek through in the recessed areas, giving a nicely subtle 3d texture. Each band is just over 2 yards long, made of cotton crochet thread. |

50 Challenge: Narrow Wares: 35/50: 4 diamond kumihimo I just finished up this kumihimo braid. It is 6 yards long, so I was working on it for awhile! I like to keep an ongoing braiding project in my purse, to keep my hands busy when I have waiting time. This one used cotton crochet thread, in purple, blue, green, and maroon, with the same spiral pattern I've been experimenting with. You can get so many different patterns out of the same sequence of movements, depending on where you start your colors. |

November Pictures: 8/30 Today was the King's & Queen's champions tournaments, here in the Kingdom of Atenveldt. It was a lovely day for it! Nice and sunny, not too hot, with a slight breeze blowing. There were mighty battles in the list field, crafting in the shade, and much laughter to be found. Our new King & Queen were busily setting the tone for their upcoming reign...which guessing from this picture I think is going to be "The King gets into Mischief". :) |

November Pictures: 7/30 Today was Coronation for the Kingdom of Atenveldt. I spent most of my day within a darkened auditorium...which my camera just isn't set to handle. I only managed to get a handful of shots. This one, while not the best (I also discovered once I got home that I had a smudge on my lense), definitely makes me giggle. I don't know what she was wanting him to do, but I do know that once the lower lip came out it was allllll over. :) (That is, by the way, one of the sweetest and most charismatic ladies around.) |

November Pictures: 6/30 Friday nights are our gaming nights, at least when there isn't something else going on. We play D&D 3.5, and usually have a marvelously chaotic and joyful time of it. We only had about 14 folks here this evening, so it was a light night. Means we actually got some playing done...when one of the new kittens wasn't trying to help out, that is. He swiped at least one of the miniatures off the table entirely, and persisted in trying to lay down on the whole bunch in a (usually successful) bid for attention. I don't think a humongous half grown tom cat is in the Monster Manual...is it? AC and hit points on that one....? |

November Pictures: 5/30 We took the family to Cracker Barrel restaurant this evening. Cracker Barrel is a chain restaurant in the US, that specializes in a version of down-home country food. My tummy was kind of upset, and nobody wanted to cook, so we hit there for stick to the ribs comfort. They decorate the restaurant with vintage knick knacks, and feature a big hearth with a (gas) fire going in the winter time. This is my daughter Michelle, sitting in front of the fire while we were waiting for our food to get to us. |

Momma never mentioned this part of a blind date....
Woman approaches a man at Starbucks who fit the description of her blind date. She approached him and asked: "Do you happen to be waiting for anyone?" The black male responded by asking if she needed any help? He then quickly seemed angry when she told him, "No." The black male asked why she had approached him? At that point, she left his table, after apologizing, and walked to another table. He then follows her to the other table, accuses her of being a terrorist, starts shoving her, and ends up being booked for assault. Headline? Police Beat: The Problem With Internet Dating. It's not clear whether she told him she was supposed to meet a blind date who fit his description or not, but ye gods man --- she apologized. Let it go. Current Mood: awake |

November is Picture a Day month
For the last few years, I've participated in the NaNoWriMo craziness in my own way, by writing a poem a day for the month. I find I don't have the oomph for that this year, but I still wanted to do something creative on a daily basis. So this year, I'm going to be carrying my little pocket camera with me, and trying for a picture a day. Here is today's: And this is sort of cheating, because I am in the picture instead of being the one taking the picture. I was posing for life drawing class today at the local community college. The weather was absolutely beautiful, so the teacher pulled out a kimono for me and took the class outside. This was a 45 minute pose. Part way through, the sun came out from behind the overcast and provided some lovely lighting. The teacher grabbed my camera and snapped the shot. There are three more pictures behind the cut, to catch up. ( Read more... ) |

Well, hunh.
I'm in the last week of the Small Business training course that an organization here called Washington CASH holds. The last couple of weeks, I've had the opportunity to do a little bit of talking about Web stuff--the basic stuff about how to think about what you want out of a Web site (and how to measure whether you're meeting your goals), what sort of content search engines like, etc. I've lived and breathed this stuff for so long that I assumed everyone knows about it. Not so much. I had an entire class full of people staring at me as if I'd just started spouting Ancient Wisdom. And, you know, it was awesome. I thought I was tired of Web stuff; evidently not. I'm going to see if I can arrange to teach some classes, because I am definitely qualified. |
